- Generally speaking the purposes of Geronimo's stay should have been agreed in details among the actors involved: Geronimo, the local NGO and the home institution of Geronimo, if any. Were the interviews planned by Geronimo approved by the local NGO? Were they part of the internship and the initial agreement to host him?
- In case the internship was sponsored by his home university, Geronimo should have gotten in touch with the international office. Embassy or local consular contacts should be engaged upon with discretion, in case one’s movements are being tracked. After reporting the incident to the diplomatic channels, it is wise to keep a record of the reports and to share them with the trusted contacts in the country of origin. Letting the local foreign contacts know about the discussions with the diplomatic channels may not be appropriate, depending on the specific relations and context of the visit abroad. In Geronimo’s case, it all depended on how well he thought he knew both his foreign contacts and the NGO before leaving for the Host Country.
- His thesis supervisor. Interviews and any other action should have been agreed, carefully considered and constantly shared with the thesis supervisor in order to define the limits and the appropriateness of each action. The Home Country university supervisor should have contacted the local supervisor at the NGO, to guarantee a co-ordinated monitoring of the activities agreed.
