In this lesson, we take a look at another kind of open collaboration beyond borders. This time the focus is on those organisations that exist at different scales (local, national, regional, international, and global) but share the same focus and purpose in advancing Open Education by implementing the UNESCO OER Recommendations’ action areas in their specific geographic area and, collaboratively, in the other members of the network’s areas. This Network has informally existed since the UNESCO OER Recommendation was unanimously approved by member states, in 2019. Starting in 2023, it became official. Thanks to members' efforts and intentional dialogue, more coordinated action is taken with fewer duplicated efforts and a broader perspective on each of them.

WHAT?

  • Title: Network of Open Orgs (NOO).
  • Description: The NOO is coordinated by Open Education Global and aims to support the implementation of the UNESCO OER Recommendation along with other large-scale, global open education efforts that require coordinated action.

WHO?

WHY?

  • It shows that coordinated efforts are an option; the intentional commitment of NOO members goes beyond their own projects and focuses: they all share the goal of implementing - and supporting others in implementing - the UNESCO OER Recs.
  • Because the voluntary work done by NOO members to create their first outputs was so effective, UNESCO reused them: the Action Matrix created by NOO was one of the main documents on which UNESCO based the Guidelines for the Implementation of the UNESCO OER Recommendation.
  • Because feeding the dialogue across countries and regions around the action areas of the UNESCO OER Recs the NOO is helping advocates and practitioners learn from each other and progress faster together.
