Assessment of Circular Economy

The Circular Economy (CE) aims to redefine growth by focusing on positive society-wide benefits, and assessing its principles is key to understanding how effectively this is being achieved. By evaluating how industries adopt circular strategies, we can identify successes and areas for improvement, thus aiding the transition to more sustainable practices. Various tools, including frameworks like Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Material Flow Analysis (MFA), and specific indicators like the Eco-Efficient Value Ratio (EVR) and Global Resource Indicator (GRI), play a crucial role in these assessments. These tools help measure the environmental and economic impacts of CE strategies, considering factors such as resource scarcity, geopolitical availability, and recyclability. Additionally, advanced methodologies like multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) and fuzzy logic enhance the evaluation process by addressing the complexity of circular systems. However, despite the growing number of assessment tools, there remains a need for a universally recognized framework to standardize circularity evaluations. This lesson will explore these tools and methodologies, providing insights into how they contribute to advancing the CE and promoting a sustainable future.
