Introduction to Knowledge Management

This lesson introduces Knowledge Management (KM) and its importance in organizations. KM is the systematic process of capturing, organizing, sharing, and applying knowledge to improve decision-making and productivity. While societies have preserved knowledge for centuries, the formal discipline of KM emerged in the late 20th century, driven by advances in technology and globalization.

The lesson covers key concepts such as the different types of knowledge—explicit, tacit, and embedded—and their impact on organizational learning. Explicit knowledge is documented and shared, tacit knowledge is based on personal experience, and embedded knowledge is integrated into systems and processes.

The DIKW Pyramid illustrates how raw data is transformed into information, knowledge, and wisdom. This model helps organizations convert data into actionable insights. The Knowledge Management Cycle outlines steps for creating, storing, sharing, and applying knowledge, ensuring a continuous flow within the organization.

The lesson also discusses KM strategies, including codification versus personalization, and the SECI model (Socialization, Externalization, Combination, Internalization). Finally, the role of technology, including AI, cloud computing, and collaboration platforms, in enhancing KM practices will be explored. By the end, participants will understand how knowledge drives innovation and efficiency in organizations.
