Why is recycling necessary?
We live in a world where the linear economy is the default system in our daily lives. That means we follow a take-make-use-dispose mentality. Resources are extracted, processed into products, used and discarded if no longer needed. Not only is this a very inefficient way to deal with the limited resources we have as we do not live on a planet that has endless resources. Also, planet Earth has a limited capacity to deal with the environmental burdens that come along with this approach. Apart from resource depletion, humanity will have to deal with problems such as effects of climate change, biodiversity loss, water depletion, land system changes, ocean acidification and pollution. In order to avoid these consequences a more sustainable approach for our economic system is needed, the circular economy.
