Characterization methods for fibre-matrix interfaces
Characterization methods for fibre-matrix interfaces
In this lesson, the different methods to characterize the mechanical properties of fibre-matrix interface in composite structures is introduced. As the interface transfers the load from the matrix to the load bearing component of the composite, i.e. the fibres, its mechanical properties and longevity are highly important. First, the concept of interface and interphase are explained for the reader and the challenges of studying their mechanical properties are explained. Then, the indirect and direct mechanical tests methods to characterize the interface are discussed. Specific focus is given to microscale test methods, as they provide more representative data of the interface properties. In the end, the aspect of longevity and ageing on the interfacial properties as well as the other characterization methods are shortly introduced. Throughout the text, specific emphasis is given to the case of recycled composites.
