Is austerity always the best policy?
To better understand how fiscal policy works when it is put in place by a government, we present a short video displaying a real-world debate on fiscal policy measures.
The video, extracted from a BBC TV show, features some British policy-makers, representatives of the Conservative Party in the British Parliament, debating with an expert economist, the Nobel prize laureate Paul Krugman, the potential effects of some decisions about fiscal policies.
We often see similar debates in all countries, because fiscal policy measures set by the government affect the economic decisions of all consumers, workers, firms and investors. Therefore, public TV channels try to inform the public about these decisions when they are made.
The debate highlights some different position on the so-called austerity measures in fiscal policy. After the video, there is a comment on its content by Lucia Tajoli.
