Italian verbs are traditionally divided into three conjugations according to the ending of the infinitive form, namely -are, -ere, -ire. Moreover, the 3rd conjugation is divided into 2 sub-groups: verbs belonging to group b just add “isc” before the ending of singular persons and before the ending of the 3rd person plural.

As for the 3rd conjugation, the bad news is that there is no rule to distinguish verbs belonging to group a from verbs belonging to group b. But the good news is that verbs of 3rd conjugation are just a few, and those of b-type are even less. The easiest thing could be to learn by heart the most common verbs belonging to group b (capire, finire, preferire, pulire, spedire, restituire, costruire). See below for details.
