Without corrective action, conflicts tend to deteriorate further, taking on an increasingly destructive dynamic. The model of the various developmental stages of a conflict, created by Friedrich Glasl (*1941), a leading expert on conflict, indicates nine stages of escalation in the intensity of a conflict.
The individual stages are not always as straightforward as the graphic of the model might suggest: in real life the various stages may present with jumps, stops and changes in direction at every possible level.
Now we’ll see the description of some scenes from the movie The War of the Roses and we’ll see each of them more specifically through all the steps of the evolution of conflicts.
PLOT
Oliver and Barbara meet during an auction and fall in love. Life continues almost perfectly, with the birth of two children and the purchase of a big house, which Barbara takes years to decorate. After years of living together, however, the marriage begins to wobble and the daily small squabbles lead them to decide to divorce. In the process of divorce, however, they both want to keep the beautiful house and this dispute forces them to continue living under the same roof.
