First, citizens were gathered to participate in a few activities, through which they could explore what was important to them in nature-based solutions in their environment. Then urban planners or designers created an initial design based on what they had heard, and citizens were gathered again to review the initial design and give feedback, after which designers would implement that feedback to make changes in the design. Finally, the citizens were gathered to begin implementing the changes that had been suggested, and through a few participatory sessions, they were able to feel they played a significant role in the changing of their surrounding green spaces.
In projects in Glasgow, Scotland and Fukutsu, Japan, citizens were also largely involved in decisions made for the natural city structures. Through citizen engagement, people connected not only more to the projects they were involved with, but also to other people they might not have otherwise connected with.
