When I used ChatGPT with the emissions tracking extension, I could actually see how much CO₂ was linked to each of my questions. I never really thought about AI having an environmental impact before but seeing the numbers made it feel more real like every search or chat has a 'cost' for the planet. It made me more careful about the way I used the tool like trying to be clearer with my questions so I wouldn’t waste extra queries. I think if more people could see this kind of data in real time, it would make us all more aware and maybe encourage us to use AI more responsibly and efficiently.

This extension designed to monitor the CO2 emissions associated with using ChatGPT provides real-time feedback on emissions for the different requests. It shows cumulative emissions, and contextual comparisons facilitating a better understanding. It was practical to use and I found it very interesting to actually see all of the emissions created by my own queries.
Overall this experience very eye-opening. The monitoring tool enhanced awareness of the hidden environmental footprint of AI. By quantifying emissions, it showed the resource intensity behind simple text-based queries. This experience made me more aware of the carbon footprint of generative AI and definitely prompted behavioral change, such as consolidating multiple small queries into fewer prompts. But most importantly, it enhanced my passion about the topic and prompted curiosity and determination to learn more about possible solutions and investigate the world of Green AI.
Monitoring tools of this type have potential applications in implementing a sustainable AI usage across both individual and institutional contexts.
In fact, they could help spread awareness among the population and could help people make more concious decisions.
Finally, seeing all of this emissions tracked and reported with precision, could help developers with future research, supporting innovation and greener strategies.
