STADIO FLAMINIO: CONSERVATION PLAN

Erica Lenticchia (Politecnico di Torino)

From its earliest years, the Getty Foundation has advanced the discipline of conservation through grants for the preservation of historical buildings. The Getty Foundation decided to create a global initiative dedicated to architecture from the modern period. The result has been Keeping It Modern, an initiative with a focus on research and thoughtful stewardship of important buildings of the twentieth century. The initiative complemented the Getty Conservation Institute’s Conserving Modern Architecture Initiative (CMAI), launched in 2012, to advance scientific research and the development of conservation solutions.

From 2014 to 2020, Keeping It Modern has supported 77 grant projects of outstanding architectural significance that contribute to advancing conservation practice.
The grants focused on the creation of conservation management plans that guide long-term maintenance and conservation policies, the thorough investigation of building conditions, and the testing and analysis of modern materials. Due to their excellence in prior planning and the quality of implementation, these projects have strong potential to serve as models for the conservation of other 20th-century buildings.
Keeping It Modern grants have allowed the Foundation to extend and deepen the worldwide engagement with architectural heritage. They have awarded grants for projects in East-Central Europe, North and South America, and North Africa, as well as several grants in Asia and the Middle East.

The goal has been to help custodians of modern sites research the buildings in their care and systematize their conservation processes, leading to optimal long-term preservation outcomes. As a service to the field, technical reports from grant projects are made freely accessible online through the Keeping It Modern Report Library. The library is updated periodically with new reports as they are completed.

The Stadio Flaminio Conservation Plan is given as a prominent example of the Conservation Management Plan of a Pier Luigi Nervi's celebrated buildings: the Stadio Flaminio.

In 2011, despite its architectural and historic importance, the stadium was decommissioned due to declining use. The plan include the analysis of the building's architecturally significant elements, investigation of its structural stability, and scientific research of materials.
