SPA_LOW_SKY: Transforming Spalowskygasse into an Artistic Encounter Zone

Promoting Cultural Diversity and Community through Art in Vienna

Rolf Laven, Project Leader and Artist; District Municipality Viennea-Mariahilf as Authority and Urban Planner; Student of different Universities and the local schools; Members of the Local Artist Community; Residents of Spalowskygasse and Neighbour Community.

Initial characteristics/needs analysis

Spalowskygasse, an urban space with a neglected public area, offers enormous potential for social and cultural activation. The goal is to transform this space into an artistic encounter zone that serves as a platform for local artists and unites the community through creative expressions.

Objectives:

  • To create an artistic encounter zone that promotes local art and activates public space.
  • To strengthen the sense of community by involving residents in artistic and cultural projects.
  • To promote intercultural dialogue and social inclusion through art and creative activities.

Tools:

  • Artistic materials and resources for the design of public spaces;
  • Digital and physical platforms for communication and event organization;
  • Surveys and feedback tools for incorporating community opinions.

Short description of the activities

The project kicks off with a public call for participation, followed by workshops and planning meetings with the community. The artistic design of Spalowskygasse includes murals, sculptures, temporary installations, and performance art. Regular events and workshops encourage cultural exchange and creative education.

Results:

  • Successful transformation of Spalowskygasse into a vibrant artistic encounter zone.
  • Increase in cultural participation and engagement of the local community.
  • Positive feedback from residents, local artists, and visitors; increased visibility and appreciation of local art.

Future initiatives should continue to promote the diversity of artistic expressions and specifically provide spaces for marginalized voices. A stronger connection with local educational institutions could enhance the project's pedagogical component.

"Creative Urban Transformations: Fostering Artistic, Green and Sustainable Communities" The SPA_LOW_SKY initiative, conceived by artist Rolf Laven, represents an exhilarating design endeavor in Vienna's heart, bridging the gap between this sculptor's studio and the educational campus at Spalowskygasse ("Bildungsgrätzl Mariahilf"). It arises as a plein-air gathering space with the involvement of artists, schools, and the local community, employing service-learning and engaged learning approaches. Embracing cultural heritage and local history, SPA_LOW_SKY plans to use various found materials and incorporate recycling and upcycling processes. This socially impactful artistic vision seeks to connect people with the city and expand Vienna's urban design process. SPA_LOW_SKY, centered around the 6th District School and its surroundings, promotes a connection between the 6th district and the Grätzl around Spalowskygasse/Mittelgasse. Furthermore, this creative learning environment enables collaboration between significant educational institutions and links to Erasmus+ projects, showcasing a commitment to sustainable practices. The initiative invites everyone to actively co-create this unique, evolving encounter zone, aiming to establish a transformative and sustainable encounter zone in Vienna Mariahilf. The conversion of Spalowskygasse and parts of Mittelgasse into car-free pedestrian zones marks the first crucial step towards transforming public space into an adaptable urban landscape. SPA_LOW_SKY envisions a space of lived diversity, coexistence without consumer pressure, unsealed ground surfaces, and gardens as learning spaces, contributing to the realization of a sponge city, repair cafés, and swap meets.

Strumenti:

  • Materiali artistici e risorse per la progettazione di spazi pubblici;
  • Piattaforme digitali e fisiche per la comunicazione e l'organizzazione di eventi;

Herramientas:

  • Materiales y recursos artísticos para el diseño de espacios públicos;
  • Plataformas digitales y físicas para la comunicación y la organización de eventos;

Werkzeuge:

  • Künstlerische Materialien und Ressourcen für die Gestaltung des öffentlichen Raums;
  • Digitale und physische Plattformen für Kommunikation und Veranstaltungsorganisation;
