Key principles of EL
Experiential Learning process is based on the following elements:
- The learner is actively engaged in asking questions, investigating, experimenting, being curious, solving creatively problems, assuming responsibility, and learning from natural consequences, mistakes, and successes.
- Experiences are carefully chosen for their learning potential.
- Reflection on learning can happen both during and after one’s experiences.
This process includes the integration of:
- Knowledge (concepts, facts, and information acquired through formal learning and past experience).
- Activity (application of knowledge to a “real world” setting).
- Reflection (analysis and synthesis of knowledge and activity based on received feedback to create new knowledge).
The experiential learning process is implemented through the 4-step cycle, based on David Kolb’s experiential learning theory:
Have you ever wondered what types of Experiential Learning opportunities exist?
Experiential Learning is a broad approach encompassing various formats and activities oriented toward an authentic learning experience. Examples of experiential Learning opportunities may include:
- Field Trips and Outdoor Learning
Example: Taking biology class students to a local wetland to study ecosystems or co-organizing with students from an architecture class an educational excursion in an urban food forest or community garden nearby.
- Simulations & roleplaying
Example: Creating a virtual economy or in an economics class where students must manage resources, trade, and negotiate.
- Service learning or community service
Example: students participate in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs and reflect on the service activity. For example, students of a course focused on spatial planning collaborate with local environmental organizations to improve their region’s urban green spaces.
- Internships
Example: Students do job-shadowing in the focus area of their field and collaborate with a local NGO/organisation, gaining valuable work experience.
