The role of educators in the Experiential Learning is dynamic and multifaceted, including various actions that contribute to an engaging and meaningful learning experience. It’s about a role that constantly evolves: a teacher in an EL activity can be mentor, designer, reflector, evaluator, learner, nurturer, and innovator, all in one.
- Facilitator: In experiential learning, teachers assume a facilitating role for the learning process. The teacher guides rather than directs the process.
- Designer of Learning Experiences: Designing meaningful, authentic experiences that align with learning objectives requires considerate planning accompanied by creativity. In experiential learning, teachers have the role of educational architect who design activities that engage students emotionally, intellectually, and physically. This can include various actions from simple hands-on experiments to complex problem-solving tasks.
- Encourager of Reflection: As reflection is a key part of experiential learning. Teachers serve also as encouragers of learning, guiding their students to articulate their thoughts, analyze their actions, and synthesize new understanding. This can be facilitated by several action such organization of reflective discussions, providing reflective journal prompts, or utilizing digital platforms that facilitate reflection.
- Provider of Feedback: Another essential role of teachers is to function as providers of useful feedback that helps students/learners recognize what went well, what not and what needs to be improved.
- Model of Lifelong Learning: In experiential learning, teachers themselves are learners. They embody models of lifelong learning, continuously adapting and developing alongside their students.
