The transition to clean energy is a pressing issue of our time, with countries and regions around the world recognizing the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the effects of climate change for a sustainable future. The European Union (EU) has been at the forefront of this effort, with its commitment to becoming climate-neutral by 2050. This lesson explores the connections between the Clean Energy Transition (CET) and gender equality, highlighting how gender equality is a critical component of the clean energy transition, and the transition to clean energy can support gender equality goals. We will also discuss the key CET policy papers of the EU, such as the European Green Deal and the Clean Energy for All Europeans package, along with the EU Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025, which focuses on eight key priority areas to promote gender equality and empower women and girls in all spheres of life. We will examine how gender inequalities affect the policy area and address gender and energy poverty, gender gaps in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), gender-responsive policies and budgeting, and promoting gender equality in the digital age.
