The O-I-S rule is a practical and pragmatic approach that will help you to best structure the communication flow of the feedback you would like to give.

1. OBSERVE
Describe the situation and/or the other's behaviour from your point of view.
Observe without evaluating.

2. IMPACT

  • On business: describe the impact the situation/behaviour has on the work environment.
  • On feelings and emotions: describe how the situation/behaviour makes you feel and/or which of your needs is compromised.

Pause - Ask for their point of view: how do they see the situation?

3. SUGGEST
Pro-actively offer possible solutions, remaining open to other proposals.
