When giving negative feedback remember:

  • I/YOU messages provoke a “fight” or “flight” reaction in the other and are not practical for the purpose of conflict communication.
  • I messages relate to the state of mind of the speaker and leave room for an open dialogue.
  • Constructive feedback is always referred to a behaviour or an action, never to a personality trait.
  • Constructive feedback should be given in the appropriate place and time, in emotionally controlled manner;
  • Follow the OIS rule (Observe - Impact - Suggest) which allows constructive feedback;
  • When receiving feedback, expressed in a respectful and acceptable manner, listen with openness, without wanting to justify or defend.
