When presented with options, most people choose the option that aligns with whatever they’re incentivised to do within their workplace — even if it is at odds with that they believe to be right. Incentives drive behaviour. Reflecting on the initial fallout of the Hayne Royal Commission, Peter Collins said:
“…businesses continually set up incentive schemes and talk of being committed to the best interests of their customers, yet incentivise their employees to sell. It’s an ethical trap…and it is almost impossible for rational employees not to sell.”
