Introducing active learning methods is like trying to start an engine that has been sitting idle for a long time. The potential is huge, but without the right approach, you can face resistance and frustration. I will share my strategy, which I believe is the key to engaging students in active learning.
Strategy: “Immersion in context and creating meaning”
1. Firstly, understand the “Why?”. Students need to understand why we are moving to active methods. Simply saying “we will now work in groups” is not enough. It is necessary to explain how this will help them better understand the material, develop critical thinking, learn to work in a team, and, ultimately, succeed in their future careers.
How to implement it:
Rules of engagement: Set clear rules for group work and discussions. Emphasize the importance of respecting others' opinions, active listening, and constructive criticism.
Gradual implementation: Don't throw students into complex projects right away. Start with simple exercises like brainstorming or think-pair-share, and gradually make the tasks more challenging.
Positive Reinforcement: Praise students for their participation, effort, and progress. Even if the answer isn’t quite right, acknowledge the positives and redirect them in the right direction. Feedback: Get regular feedback from students about what’s working and what’s not. Be prepared to adapt your methods to suit their needs.
Additional resources and approaches:
Gamification: Using game elements (points, rewards, competitions) can significantly increase motivation and engagement.
Technology: Interactive online platforms such as Kahoot!, Mentimeter or Padlet allow you to engage all students in the learning process and receive instant feedback.
Variety of methods: Use different active methods (discussions, debates, role-playing games)
