The quantitative features of the MOOC phenomenon are quite impressive. At the beginning of 2018, on a global scale, there were already more than 800 universities involved in the production of MOOC, more than 81 million users and over 9.400 MOOCs available, with a significant growth trend: 2.650 more compared to 2016. The leading portals offering MOOC are Coursera and edX that, respectively counting 30 and 14 million people enrolled, cover about 50% of users. At the end of 2018, over 500 MOOCs offer more evolved training certifications, both with recognition of formative credits on a university level, and recognition of professional competencies in accordance with companies, referred to as: Specialization, Professional education, Micromaster, Professional Certificate, etc. The MOOC world is evolving continuously and is experiencing a lively growth.

The numbers are such that the topic, often brought up, of the low percentage of completion of the courses (among the people who access the totally free courses and do not purchase the certification service, only 10% achieve completion) doesn’t diminish the relevance of the phenomenon that, if it only concerned a tenth of participants in terms of training efficacy, would still achieve very respectable numbers, in the order of millions of users trained all over the world.
